CEO of AMC Entertainment Adam Aron cited that Netflix is generally considered more popular for overall movie consumption than going to theaters, driven by convenience, cost, and massive subscriber bases (Netflix has 300M+ subscribers). Polls show most Americans stream new releases at home, viewing streaming as more convenient and affordable than organizing a trip to the cinema....

AMC Entertainment has not recorded a full-year net profit since 2018. Following that last profitable year, the company has faced significant, consecutive annual losses primarily driven by the pandemic-induced industry shutdown in 2020, slow box office recovery, and heavy debt loads, resulting in roughly seven consecutive years of not turning an annual profit (through 2025)....

The Rise of Streaming: The convenience of watching movies at home has significantly reduced the motivation for many to travel to a theater, a trend accelerated by the pandemic. Poor Theater Experience & Maintenance: Many, though not all, AMC locations are reported to be old, rundown, or poorly maintained. Specific complaints include issues with cleanliness, unruly guests, and poor enforcement of theater etiquette. Aggressive Advertising: AMC has added more commercials before the start of movies to boost revenue, which has met with significant backlash from customers who feel it ruins the viewing experience. High Debt Load: AMC is grappling with massive debt, leading to, at times, desperate financial strategies, such as the widely criticized investment in a gold and silver mining company....

Multiple AMC theater locations have faced issues with rat infestations, leading to temporary closures and numerous customer complaints as of early 2026. These incidents include the AMC Lincoln Square 13 in New York City, where overflowing trash bins and visible rat activity, particularly late at night, have been observed . The problem at this location has been linked to inconsistent garbage removal practices and open lids on bins, potentially violating city sanitation rules implemented in March 2024. Similarly, the AMC Orpheum on the Upper East Side of New York City has garnered significant attention, with moviegoers reporting multiple rat sightings during screenings and expressing dissatisfaction with staff responses....

Why are so many movies failing? The more a film costs to make (and market), the more it has to make to avoid flopping at the box office. Yesterday, Nikki Elizabeth Rodriguez called me collect from the Federal Detention Center in Brooklyn, New York. In addition to overstaying her tourist visa, she has been charged by the SEC with pumping a junk stock without a license. I asked her if the facility allows conjugal visits, and she replied, "I'm not sure, but P Diddy is housed just downstairs, so I no longer need you." I guess she is planning a freak off behind bars. Where will they find cases of baby oil? Anyway, she asked me to extend her greetings to this message board, and not to sell AMC shares even when they decline below 99 cents. In her own words, she stated, "The community must HODL all the way to zero in order to erase Wall Street corruption." Somehow, I still miss that fair maiden. She always fought for the poor and the disenfranchised....

AMC Entertainment has faced persistent, long-term bankruptcy risks, largely stemming from a high debt load ($4.5 billion to over $8 billion, depending on the valuation period) and a slow recovery in box office revenue.
